The Story of the Salvation Army Doughnut Girls of WWI

In 2018, our country commemorated the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. Not coincidently, it is also the 100th anniversary of the famous connection of The Salvation Army to the doughnut. This simple ring-shaped piece of fried dough introduced to the “Doughboys” in WWI by The Salvation Army “Doughnut Girls” in many ways helped shape history. In 1938, the first Friday in June was declared National Doughnut Day to honor the service of the “Doughnut Girls” in WWI.
